When I first read about becoming a Raw Foodist, I couldn?t wait to start. And I didn?t. Overnight I abandoned my bachelor?s diet of burgers, Subways, chicken patties, and burritos for raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. I couldn?t wait to experience increased energy, glowing physical perfection, and a longer healthier life. After I took the big leap, many unexpected changes started happening; things I hadn?t read about like the negative physical side effects and the incredible spiritual dimension of being Raw. Within these pages are details that raw food advocates don?t preach and have not written about. In honest detail, Raw Spirit prepares you for the world you could be walking into if you choose to become Raw, or if you are already. The second half of Raw Spirit is an extensive interview with Dr. Fred Bisci, PhD, 40 year raw food pioneer, and Master Nutritionist. Included is Dr. Bisci?s Intermediate Healing Diet, a protocol similar to what he gives clients who want to heal from dis-ease. Although I feel 100% Raw is the optimal diet for the human body if done correctly, it may not be for you. This intermediate diet, containing some cooked foods, can be adopted as your daily diet for health and healing; or it can be used to transition safely and easily to your new Raw Lifestyle.
True, there are some grammatical problems with this book, but it's not meant to be a literary masterpiece. It's the message that is important. I give this book five stars because I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is raw, transitioning to raw, or thinking about going raw. There are ups and downs with this diet -- mostly ups, but the downs are rarely discussed in other books. The book doesn't claim to be the last word on the subject, either. It encourages the reader to educate themselves as best they can by reading from several sources. Good advice!

I found this book very useful and honest. Especially important was what to expect when you embark on a raw food diet. Your body will feel different. Highly Recommended.
Nice, but lack of substance

I applaud the author for sharing his experience, and since going mostly raw a month ago, I read with great interest. I especially liked the interview at the end. But I don't feel there's a great depth of information or insight here; I read in one sitting and didn't learn very much (although I've read a lot already on veganism and the raw diet). And it remained very much a mystery to me that he would have such great difficulty with gas and binging on fruit - I have found the opposite, that any desire to overeat has left me, and I have no problem with gas or indigestion of any kind. I feel great, but I also am not 100% raw - I found that impossible and prefer to mix it up with a steamed veggie or soup in the evenings, and that's perfect for me.
A Beautiful Book

matt writes simply & honestly. this was a pleasure to read & i felt none of the ego one usually encounters in the raw food world. some of the things he discusses are often talked about, but never written down - i was surprised by his candour. i really valued his focus on the need for elimination & undereating - raw fooders/healthful eaters frequently underestimate the importance of releasing the vast amounts of inherited & lifelong toxicity, & that ongoing colonics, enemas or colemas are essential to maintaining health. anything about Fred Bisci is a gift - it's a lovely book.
