Nicholas, Earl of Ravensdene, returns to his ancestral home in Sussex after over a decade of fighting in battlefields in the Continent - Napoleon abdicated the year before. Ravensdene now works for the Foreign Office and his return to Essex is primarily to catch a traitor. What he didn't bargain for was the relentless pursuits of the local misses and their matchmaking mamas. To make matters worst, he finds himself surprisingly intrigued by the niece of his prime suspect. Sarah Lynley is sweet and is universally adored by everyone. She is a bundle of nerves whenever she and Ravensdene meet - although it didn't stop her from pointing a pistol at him! Our hero is wonderfully tall, dark - every inch a man! Despite his lethal strength he is always wonderfully gentle when it comes to our heroine. Sarah is innocent and delicate due to a horrible tragedy she faced at a very young age. Which is why I love their story so much. It makes for a refreshing change from the seemingly standard strong, independent and opinionated heroine. Despite his overwhelming desire for her, he courts her ever so patiently. And it's wonderful to see how Sarah slowly blossoms and finally becomes a woman. The love scenes may be considered chaste by modern standards but the intense passion and desire between the two is always there just simmering. Although chastely described, the big love scene (practically near the end!) is wonderfully intense. I love that Sarah is so different from the usual heroine. No shouting matches, no battles of stubborn wills. Their love story is exquisitely tender but passionate!

The Earl of Ravensdene goes back to his seat in Sussex to hunt down a spy and finds himself in hot pursuit of the totally refreshing and somewhat mysterious Miss Lynley. You'd think the plot is old and tried but Ms. Byrne certainly knows how to write a Regency romance and for that I thank her heartily. The plot, the story, and the characters are all very well developed and portrayed and Ms. Byrne has a wonderful sense of humor to boost. She keeps you in suspence until the very last pages, I couldn't put the book down. While this might be the firt book I read by Ms. Byrne, I am quite certain it shall not be the last.
