Leila Payson, a south Miami high school teacher, is back with more adventures as she deals with a new man in her life, her eclectic crew of friends, and a possible new career. In her spare time, Leila works with Doug, a paraplegic, who is preparing for a wheelchair race. Her travels take her to Merritt Island Refuge, Sebring racetrack, and South Africa. Among the other characters whose lives intersect with hers, Cran Birdsall wrecks his vintage car and wakes up half-paralyzed. His son Charles gets engaged to RoK, a female race driver. Charles and Raoul try to help Dov, the gay event planner, reunite with his lover, the hunky Cuban bird guide. Leila's father seems to be involved with Cran's wife, Berry. Another friend, Maria, decides to change the course of her life. At her school, Leila organizes a big tent meeting to discuss complaints. There's an accidental DNA match, a cult and mysterious sisters, rumors and a renegade guidance counselor. All the while Leila is moving along, coming closer to discovering what Doug meant when he said he was "racing the sun."
