Good vision makes students think

I have used this book in three first and second-year writing classes this year, and it has worked wonderfully. The chapters are engagingly written and creatively address precisely what should be the philosophy behind writing and research and, in fact, college itself. They also explain thoroughly yet not overly the methodology for going about the investigations and composing processes. The student examples are very helpful to them. And the casebooks, which I personally would never choose myself as topics for students, the students themselves seem to thoroughly enjoy! They feel that--as first year students--they have become "experts" in a topic by the end of the quarter, and they expand from casebook to personal-choice topics easily. It all makes for lively discussions in class and surprisingly impassioned presentations of their "findings" and arguments. Were I the editor, I would cut here and there (the long interview in Chapter 1, for instance) but no more (in fact much less) than I would with any other textbook. All in all, I commend Prof. Stallings for a helpful, engaging text that has certainly made my life easier and more interesting this year.
