This is a large, lift-a-flap, board book which traces the adventure of a Saint Bernard puppy all around the farm yard as he searches for his lost dog bone. Along the way [hidden behind the flaps] he meets a variety of common farm inhabitants including a porcupine, cat, snail, gopher, mice, spiders, birds, butterfly, grasshoppers, rabbits, worms, and even a scarecrow. Without fail, on a daily basis, my son returns enthusiastically to the classic story and images found in this book. Why five stars? The illustrations are colorful, cheerful and reasonably realistic... not at all exaggerated or cartoonish like those so often disappointingly found in children's books. There are 20 flaps of assorted shapes and sizes throughout the book. The flaps on each spread are dispersed well so that the pages turn easily even if all flaps are not laid flat again before turning. The flaps are very sturdy, and this is THE major point I'd like to stress as being worth every one of the five stars I give this book. My now 16-month old son has put this book to daily use for more than three months, yet the flaps are still intact and look like new. This is one book that will survive nicely for our next child to enjoy. That makes it worth every penny and all five stars, and quite literally a keeper!
