Pugnax the Gladiator: A young person's guide to late Republican Rome
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 7 years ago
Anderson paints a vivid portrait of life in I century BCE Rome in a series of interconnected short stories. As the name implies, the hero is a gladiator, who gets into interesting situations in Rome. Although death and gore is in the background it is not give a central position. The hero is a bit of a rough and tumble sort with a very good heart.
I read its 5 book series when I was in my early teens 55 years ago. Because they were written from 1929 to 1939 for a youthful audience the language, situations, and content should not offend any but the most rabid PC parents. For an older audience I would recommend Warner and Graves, but this is a very good read.
