I had the pleasure of taking a course in Sport Psychology from John Silva himself. He is co-author of this text. He is incredibly knowledgable and really knows the field. He was the first president of AAASP, and the first editor of the Journal for Applied Sport Psychology. The man truly knows his stuff, and being in the classroom with him really lit up the subject for me! His knowledge shines through in this textbook! He has so much experience in the field, and there's no one who could present better, more thorough information. If you're looking for someone who has experience in the field of sport psychology, look no further. The shortcoming of this text is that it is little bit dry. Silva is articulate and clear, but he can be a bit long-winded in his writing. It is a very interesting subject to me, but the text was difficult to read at times. Sometimes he provides so much detail that you cannot see the "big picture." The book is pretty much a lot of black and white writing with a few assorted pictures and diagrams. I would like to see the formatting improved a bit. It is a very informative book from a very informed man, but the pitfall is definitely the presentation. Overall, however, I believe it is a great text because it gives such a broad expanse of knowledge on the subject. Just know that the text itself is far from a riveting novel.
