Book Overview

Prophecy and Authority: A Study in the History of the Doctrine and Interpretation of Scripture is a book written by Kemper Fullerton. The book explores the history of the doctrine and interpretation of scripture, with a particular focus on prophecy and authority. Fullerton examines the ways in which different religious traditions have understood the concept of prophecy and how this understanding has influenced the interpretation of scripture. He also explores the role of authority in shaping the interpretation of scripture, looking at how different religious traditions have approached questions of authority and how this has impacted their interpretation of the Bible. The book is a comprehensive study of the history of the doctrine and interpretation of scripture, providing valuable insights into the ways in which different religious traditions have approached these important issues.1919. This study grew out of investigations undertaken which were designed to form part of a more general work on the history of Biblical Interpretation. The subject chosen is a study of the problem of predictive Messianic prophecy as that is revealed in the history of biblical interpretation. The present essay seeks to show that the fact of predictive prophecy has been maintained only by means of a false principle of exegesis, that when a scientific principle of exegesis is adopted the theory of predictive prophecy must be abandoned, and that the scientific principle of exegesis has been formally and finally adopted by the Protestant churches because of a great religious need and in a profoundly religious interest. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
