This is the story of Jilly Coppercorn' early life and how she struggles to overcome her horrific past to find a life with the possibility of meaning and happiness with the help of some very crucial friends. When the chance for a life of happiness without effort is offered to her will she accept it as a recompense for what she has had to suffer in her past, and in the process leave behind the friends who are helping her shape a new life step by slow step? While there are aspects of this very moving story which feel somewhat underdeveloped, Charles de Lint always succeeds in drawing us in to the life of his characters. Among his continuing characters over several books and stories none is more significant than Jilly Coppercorn, bohemian artist who incorporates elements of fantasy in her realistic paintings of urban life. This is an essential and effective foundation tale of her life and growth.
