Only Book He Had Time to Read in Iraq

Before our son deployed to Iraq, we loaded him up with a variety of books to occupy his spare time. As it turned out, there was precious little spare time. Promises for the Battle was the only book our son read from cover to cover! Douglas Knighton, former Air Force chaplain, wrote these devotions for his men in the theater of war. Each message is concise and inspirational. Our son was deeply encouraged by this book. I make it a practice to give Promises for the Battle to anyone I know being deployed to the battle zone.

Make Time in Your Day for this Book

For a Christian, from one new in the faith to seasoned veteran, this book brings the timeless inspired wisdom of the Scriptures to the 21st century struggle that we all face. Promises for the Battle is a wonderful, understandable book that imparts easily digestable portions of Biblical truth. Every other page provides for a moment's introspection with a Scripture verse, a commentary, a closing thought and a space for one's own ideas. It could be used as a daily devotional as well as a spiritual journaling tool. The topics, ranging from success to patience, are pertinent and demand attention in the lives of all believers. Doug Knighton's work shows him to be an accomplished warrior in the spiritual as well as physical realms. One would do well to hear what a seasoned veteran has to say.

Hekful information Shaped as an Indispensable Tool

Knighton understands that the full blessings of the Christian life come from fighting the good fight of faith (1 Tim. 6:12) in banking one's confidence for the future on God's "many great and valuable promises" (2 Pet. 1:4). The confidence thus gained urges an obedience of faith in complying with God's commands. The book deals with seventy promises, ten under each of seven headings. One heading is "Success" understood as learning to be confident of enjoying God's blessings in the near and distant future. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13) implies God's promise to give one staying power for the unexpected changes the days ahead will bring. Then there is Ecclesiastes 10:10, which states how vital wisdom is for gaining the success of enjoying God's blessings. Such verses appear, with a brief meditation and prayer. on even-numbered pages on the left. The odd-numbered pages to the right are left blank, so readers can make note of helpful thoughts that came to them as they pray and meditate on a promise. So, more than giving information, this book is a valuable tool for learning "the obedience of faith" (Rom. 1:5), which is the sum of the Christian life. Small-group leaders will want to procure this book with its curriculum for seventy sessions. S/Daniel Fuller, Emeritus Professor of Bible Interpretation, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California.
