Accurately titled introduction for non-beginners

The title says it all: it's for professionals. This is not a gentle introduction for those new to server-side programming so you will not find chapters on HTML, C#, VB, basic program design etc. Experienced developers will find this a cost-effective and time-efficient guide to ASP.NET. The wide range of topics includes among others ASP.NET architecture fundamentals, XML in ASP.NET, security, custom controls, configuration, state management, performance, data access, migration and web services. As usual for books with multiple authors, the writing is variable but in the 6 chapters I have read so far it ranges from reasonable to quite good. The absence of pedestrian click-this-click-that instructions and endless repetitive screenshots mean that this sizeable tome (1300+ pages) is packed with concise and solid information and very little fluff. It really does show that this book was written by professionals for professionals. The chapters are mostly self-contained and are not intended to be read in sequence. Those new to ASP.NET but with a good grounding in ASP and programming generally, will want to dip into this book whenever they need a quick introduction to new areas. Many developers may find some chapters of no interest because they never have to deal with the topic addressed but with such complete coverage, the buyer can feel confident the relevant information is on her bookshelf should she need it. Though I have absolutely no interest in mobile devices, I am glad I read the relevant chapter. I recommend that eventually you give every chapter a quick read. Unlike many other books, this one is not padded with long or numerous appendices. There are just three, covering performance tips, source of further information and an overview of the core namespaces. This book, the "ASP.NET In a Nutshell" reference from O'Reilly and the Microsoft documentation together will be all I need for ASP.NET. Of the (too) many programming books I have bought over the years, this is among the best. Highly recommended!

Very detailed ASP.NET resource.

The authors of this book clearly took a lot of time to ensure that the content is relevant to real-world developers, and it shows. Through the use of pertinent examples and sample code, even the most complex topics are understandable. The portions of the book that relate to data access (Chapters 8-11) were particularly useful, as ADO.NET is very powerful, but takes time to really understand. Often, I'd find myself wondering, "but what if I want to...", and the next section would answer the question. If you're looking for procedural information about how to just do the bare minimum to get an application running, this isn't the book for you. If, instead, you'd like to truly understand how ASP.NET and it's MANY features work, I would highly recommend buying and reading this book. I know I'll be referring to the content for the next several months.

All round excellent resource

I have to admit this book has been vital in our development. This is one of those reference books that a .Net developer cannot do without. Although not specific to any one language, this book covers the major aspects of .Net that aided in our initial development. We look forward to more titles from wrox.

Covers many aspects of ASP.NET

Active Server Pages (ASP) has proven to be a very popular technology for web developers. The main reason for this has been ease of use. Even though ASP can run on other platforms, it is mainly found on the Windows platform. The advent of Microsoft's .NET framework has caused many people to wonder about the future of web development for windows based developers. 'Professional ASP.NET' is aimed at existing ASP developers who are considering the move to .NET. The authors begin the book with various introductions, i.e. ASP.NET, .NET framework and the main languages that it supports. The emphasis then shifts to the bread and butter aspects of ASP.NET, the server controls, data access, debugging and error handling. The book also covers some important issues such as the architecture and how to use and extend the intrinsic server controls. Chapters are also dedicated to Web Services and other devices such as phones and PDAs. Chapter 23 is concerned with the issues involved in migrating your existing ASP applications to ASP.NET. The final chapter is a case study of implementing a simple n-tier e-commerce application with ASP.NET. All in all the standard of ASP books from Wrox have been high in the past and the leagacy of books such as 'Professional ASP 2.0' lives on with the latest offering. If you are a serious ASP developer then this book is essential.

Great offering from WROX on ASP.NET!

This one is a great offering from WROX on ASP.NET! It covers different ASP.net flavours,Garbage collection, web services, caching, datasets, windows services, threading (and thread pooling) and much more...The book also covers the .NET Common Language Runtime (or CLR for short) which provides a level of encapsulation between the developer and the operating system, thereby making writing Windows programs simpler. So the developer will no longer have to worry about low-level details such as memory management, pointer management, language differences, and other common annoyances. If you are an EXPERIENCED ASP Developer, currently developing with ASP 3.0, and are considering the implications of the .NET Framework, then this book is FOR YOU .It is aimed at experienced ASP developers who are working at the leading edge, rather than the casual ASP developer or beginner. You will also need Windows 2000 environment to test and run ASP.Net
