Book Overview

Pro Hibernate 3 provides current, up-to-date information about Hibernate 3 that programmers can't get anywhere else. Not only is it the first book to cover Hibernate 3 and all of the new features, it also provides an introduction to the latest version of this apparent established standard for object relational persistence in the Java world.

A Good Follow-Up

This is a good follow-up to the book by the same authors, Beginning Hibernate: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: from Novice to Professional). There is a certain feeling of overlap between the two books, but that is probably understandable, seeing that the same authors wrote both. Still, there is valuable information in here.

Caveat Emptor!

I've been using Hibernate for a while, mostly Hibernate 2.1.x. I've got a new project starting, and it's going to be using Hibernate 3, so I decided to book up - get the latest in the Hibernate 3 book universe. When I start a project using a given technology, I usually just snarf up all the best books I can find, read, and begin to implement. I went to the local B & N, and pulled all the Hibernate 3 books in the Java section (slim pickings, unfortunately), and started to read. Guess what. These guys have another Hibernate book ("Hibernate, Beginner to Pro", or somesuch), which has direct (and I mean *DIRECT*) transcriptions of what's in *this* book. I've got a bunch of Hibernate and SQL books already. Had I not taken the time to read, I might have bought two Hibernate 3 books with a lot of common content I really don't need. So, here's the deal, APress: Make it clear when a given book is a subset of another. Sorry for the rant. Apart from this, the book looks pretty good. For what it's worth, I say this as a Hibernate user with about 5 years experience of the technology.

Lots of good information, no fluff

I found this book fills in a lot of the gaps left by Hibernate's online docs, but didn't dwell on the simple, basic stuff. It's been particularly useful in the area of defining relationships involving collections--one of the trickiest parts of setting up a mapping.

Well-written introduction

I got this book in order to find out what Hibernate was all about and whether I could use it in my projects. I started with no idea of the framework at all and a couple of questions about its general use. These questions I had were answered right in the first few chapters when the overall usefulness of Hibernate was discussed. And given the well-written chapters of the book (as a non-native English speaker I had absolutely no problems understanding them) I got a good grasp of the Hibernate basics as well. I think it's a very good book that's surely worth its price.

Good reference manual

I had already read Hibernate in Action and used Hibernate for a few weeks before purchasing this book. It has a nice reference section for determining which attributes can be used on a tag. Not as good as HIA for getting started, but if you already are familiar with Hibernate, it will stay on your desktop and not make it to the bookcase.
