Very good historical book.

I homeschool my two children for 5th and 6th grade. We did a study unit on the Civil War. I found this book at the library and read it outloud to my children in connection with studying the Battle of Gettysburg. It was a perfect companion to a study of the battle, especially using the chapter titles with dates leading up to the battle. My children were glued to this story and the ending was so perfect for this age. Of course, real life does not have a happy ending always but they were so happy that Reuben and Captain were alive! I highly recommend this story.

True Determination

Private Captain is truly a touching and moving book. When Ben's father suddenly dies, he sets out to find his brother Reuben, who's fighting in the war, and bring him back home. Reuben¡¯s loyal dog, Captain and his pesky cousin, Danny, soon follow him. Along the way, Ben encounters Confederate soldiers, many of whom he tricks to think he's a Confederate too. He also finds pure horror like wounded and dead soldiers, carcasses, and the feeling of dread. After awhile, Ben came to love Captain, but Captains ends up running away. Nothing's going right. Reuben's whereabouts are unknown, Captain is gone, and Danny almost got himself killed. After about two weeks, Ben's mother finds him and they go home. Now Ben feels horrible, but shortly after he arrived home, Reuben came into town, a hero. And to Ben's delight, Captain's back too. This book is perfect for adventure lovers of all ages. I highly recommend it to people who like studying wars. Just remember, in your hour of dread, hang in there.

Two Boys and a Cow and a Dog

Private Captain is about two boys, Ben and Danny, and they go on a very cool adventure. The adventure is back during the war of Gettysburg, and Ben is trying to find his brother, Reuben, and tell him his Pa died and to come home. Ben and Danny go to lots of places like Danny's cousin's, Travis, house. this book is good for good readers and people that are linked to learning about the Gettysberg war. If you're into adventure and action, you should read this book. Marty Crisp, the author, does a good job of telling action and adventure in this book. He makes you feel happy at times, but the other places in the book are very sad. So if you like action and adventure, I think you should get this book.
