There have been many modern guides to the collection of antique gold and silver, but W. J. Cripps's Old English Plate, covering as it does such a wide field-church treasures as well as decorative and domestic wares-is acknowledged to be one of the most important and authoritative works in its field. The author's expert survey of the goldsmith's and silversmith's craft throughout the British Isles is meticulously detailed and fully annotated. He begins with a definition of the properties, standards and weights of gold and silver, describing the methods of assaying their quality; this introduces the general historical section on charters, acts of parliament, guilds, hall marks, makers' marks and date letters. The book goes on to describe the work produced in the great provincial centres-York, Newcastle, Norwich, Hull, Lincoln-and then devotes particular attention to the work of Scottish and Irish craftsmen. A chapter on ecclesiastical plate is followed by a long section on three centuries of decorative and domestic plate, illustrated by more than too superb woodcuts of some of the most beautiful and precious examples known. The work concludes with an appendix devoted exclusively to makers' marks and date letters, chronologically listed, going back to 1478 and extending through to the middle of the 19th century-an invaluable guide to accurate identification of precious wares over a period of 400 years. This book's immense value to collectors of fine gold and silver and to later historians of the subject has been proved by the fact that the half century following its publication in 1878 saw the book go through 11 editions.
