Deliciously Fun!

Average Wendy Applegate, hides her true identity, her true beauty behind a mask of makeup and deceit. When called home to deal with a family emergency those secrets become harder to hold on to. The family dynamics that Ashley addresses in this piece are familiar and relevant in a day and age where the media is all about beauty. Even though it is a romance novel, it deals with the need we all have to be accepted and appreciated for who we are. It is a great read and lots of fun!

Better than your average EC novel

When her mother falls ill, Wendy returns to her hometown to care for her while trying to keep her alter ego under wraps. For the last several years, she has been the lead singer of a rock band that resorts to make up to keep their mysterious anonymity. When the sexy doc next door shows up at one of her concerts, she gets to live out one of her fantasies - to have a passionate night of no strings sex. Only problem is, he keeps showing up at her concerts and she is starting to get jealous of... herself, especially when he starts coming on to her without realizing they are the same person. Further complicating matters is her music partners sudden increased interest in her. Will she come clean and stand next to rather than behind her beauty queen sister? Filled with plenty of passion, Ladd's ode to getting a second chance at unrequited love is a real page turner, and above average for an Ellora's Cave novel (they usually are pretty light on plot). I completely disliked her sister and mother, finding them to be extremely petty and condescending.I just found the premise that he wouldn't have a clue he was with the same girl to be ludicrous (just like in those stupid Superman movies - oh he has on glasses, he can't be superman). That and I kept wondering if her make up was rubbing off on him what with how active they were. But it did not detract from holding my attention.

Great storyline

I won't say too much because I hate it when people tell you so much that you may as well not get it. This however, I would definitely pick up, if you like romantica in a contemporary setting. It was spicy when it needed to be, dealt with many ordinary woman's insecurities and even made me laugh out loud in a couple of spots. I loved the hero and her band members and hope very much to hear from some of them in the future. It's a keeper for me and will be checking out Civil Affairs next!
