Not bad, just not my particular writing style.

Ok, this is another book I didn't finish, but might pick up again another time. The plot was intriguing to me, but it just seemed to fall short of the book's summary. I definitely love reading books with CIA or FBI characters, but former FBI agent Terra Connors was too hard to relate to, and had such a cold and aloof demeanor. Also former FBI agent Jack Tanner really wasn't much better either. Sometimes I honestly couldn't tell who was talking, as there wasn't enough labeling of "Terra said, Jack stated," etc.. It was mainly the writing style that just didn't work for me. I'm not much for romance themed books, and especially not with a lot of drama or angst. The mountain scenery was neatly depicted and easy to visualize, though. It made you want to go visit the park and see it for yourself. This might just be a book that you have to get past the first few chapters to enjoy. Not bad though, just not my cup of tea. I received a free copy of this book from Revell in exchange for an honest review, and the thoughts above are my own.

Great Suspense

Present Danger by Elizabeth Goddard is the first book in her Rocky Mountain Courage series. US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Conners and former FBI Special Agent Jack Tanner are called in to investigate a dead body found in the national forest. What they uncover could cost them their very lives. Terra and Jack were a very likable team. I thought the chemistry between them made a very good balance for all the suspense and mystery in the story. The surprise twist at the end was awesome and very unexpected! A great beginning to the series. I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.

Intense suspense

"The direction your life takes can often come down to one decision, one moment in time." Such an exciting and adrenaline-filled start to a new series! In her trademark fashion, Elizabeth Goddard weaves an action-packed, heart-pounding suspense with a complex and intricate plot that will have you guessing until the very end. I really enjoyed how all the pieces and clues fell into place to create a bigger picture than either of the main characters suspected when they took on the investigation. Jack and Terra have their voices in the story as the main characters but there is a third voice from a man named Chance whose role in the case is quite ambiguous until the end. I can't wait to read the second book in the series about Terra's friend Erin and Jack's co-worker Nathan. Jack, ex-FBI and now a county detective, and Terra, ex-NPS and now a forest service special agent, have a rocky past together. Despite having grown and matured through the years that separated them, they still have a difficult and awkward time working together to solve a murder investigation in the national forest of Montana. The initial investigation leads to more confusing and deadly encounters and it gets personal when Terra becomes targeted. Jack and Terra's backstory is heavy with regret, self-doubt, and mistakes but their feelings for each other solidify as they dodge bullets, brainstorm theories, and work to protect others from harm. Archaeological trafficking is something I wasn't really aware of until this book. I received the book from Revell and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Riveting suspense romance

Present Danger is a wow-I-did-not-see-that-coming kind of book. Having read one other book by Elizabeth Goddard, I kind of knew what to expect, and was not disappointed. The story starts out with a plane crash and the edge-of-the-seat action continues as the body count rises. The characters are colorful and riveting, as well as realistic and either likable, relatable, or despicable. Terra and Jack had been involved in circumstances previously, and things did not end well. I enjoyed watching their relationship begin again and evolve into more than colleagues looking for a murderer. The dialogue flowed seamlessly without sounding forced, and most of the book, with its non-stop action, was unpredictable. I like how the author revealed things layer by layer, keeping me wondering how scenarios were ever going to work out. Readers who love exciting, heart-stopping mysteries will not want to miss Present Danger. It keeps you eagerly reading until the very last page. It is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series and I will be looking for the next to come. I was given a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
