Priceless Advice from Great Preachers

This book is a collection of more than 20 interviews that Preaching Magazine has done over the years. The magazine editor interviews of today's msot brilliant communicators on ghow they prepare and pray over and preach their sermons. They all have different styles and they don't all agree at every point, but they do agree on one thing: Preaching is hard! It takes many hours to put together a quality Sunday morning sermon. Another thing the ministers have in common is that they not only exegete the text, they exegete the congregation. They ask themselves "How will this text come across to the man who has just lost his job, or to the elderly widow trying to scrape by on social security? How can I apply this to their lives?" These are some of the things that the 20 ministers have in common, but there also some significant differences. Haddon Robinson, Bryan Chappell, David Jeremiah, Jerry Vines, Jim Henry, and Adrian Rogers are convinced that expository preaching (done properly) is the best way to preach because you are speaking the word of God with authority, the way it is in the text. But Andy Stanley is not a big fan of expository preaching (at least as he understands it), and Rick Warren says that God uses all kinds of methods of preaching to reach all kinds of people, and if God is blessing it, then praise the Lord! The Bishop TD Jakes was interviewed as well. He is such an eloquent man, and his first person account of how he used to wake up at night at the prompting of the Spirit to flesh the sermon God put into his head was fascinating. He talks about how he uses the great narratives of the Old Testament as metaphors for the struggles that people go through today. I pray that someday, he will embrace an orthodox understanding of the Trinity. The only thing I would do differently with this book is that I would interview more small church pastors. Every one one of the preachers in this book is either a megachurch pastor, or is widely known in the Christian world for being erudite and successful. What about the small church guy who doesn't have the luxury of working with a pastoral leadership team in the sermon crafting process? What about the guy who has labored long and hard for 14 years to preach through the books of the Bible in the same small town congregation? What about the guy who shuffles from parish to parish every four years? This aside, I thought the book was inspiring and helpful! It is definitely a five star book that pastors will want to read.
