The mood and method of this thriller seem ripped from, or ripe for, TV's "Law and Order." Johnston tells nearly all early, and then keeps you completely engrossed in watching the hunt for a murderer and a missing child in Manhattan as the past and the present come together. The writing is spare but the characters matter as the plot races on.
