Book Overview

Tobey Heydon is "practically seventeen" and thinks she is old enough to make her own decisions. Whether it's saving her sister Alicia from last minute wedding disasters to keeping her sister Janet informed on her little boy's well-being to hiding her diary from her little sister Midge, Tobey handles it all with Brose by her side. They survive the arrival of a beautiful blonde at the lake but will they survive Tobey's mysterious date for the Heart...

Delightful, funny -- the Heydons are a great family!!

No teenage angst here -- just funny situations and delightful characters! This book has been a favorite of mine since childhood, when I first read it. The Heydons are a down-to-earth family with problems we all understand, particularly as many of them revolve around BOYS. Tobey has to cope not only with her two older sisters (her married sister Janet whose husband is away in Central America and her engaged sister Alicia, whose temper is always uncertain) but with her younger sister Midge, who's at the perfect age to drive Tobey up the wall. Whether it's volunteering to help Janet by reporting on the care of Janet's young son, or quietly helping Alicia achieve a dream wedding despite Alicia's grumpy personality, or finding a way to hide her diary (and her boy miseries) from Midge, Tobey has her hands full. The book is full of memorable characters and wonderful situations, all written from the point of view of Tobey herself, a practical, upbeat girl with a large circle of good friends and a boyfriend we'd all like to have. The best part is Tobey's `schemes' involving Brose and Alicia -- they start out being so workable and end up getting EVERYONE in hot water! It's the first in a series of books about Tobey (at least four, I believe, of which I've only read THE REAL THING, another keeper). This is one to read and enjoy again and again -- while I believe it was first written in the early '40's, its appeal is lasting. Don't miss it!

Wonderful youth of that time

This book was marvelous. It was young love at its best it is the first duJardin book I read and I just fell in love with them. This book made me look forward to more I wanted to learn more about Toby and her family. It made me wish for happy carefree times like those. This book takes you back to a time when life center on family, home and commitments not sex, drugs and other things. I loved this book and all of the other ones I give it a six star rating lol
