Background of the study "The joyfulness of man prolonged his days" (Bible, Ecclesiasticus. 30:22) "Mirth and merriment ... bars a thousand harms and lengthens life" (Shakespeare). For centuries, folk wisdom has promoted the idea that positive emotions are good for health. Research shows that positive emotions serve a buffering function and provide a useful antidote to the problems associated with negative emotions and ill health (Fredrickson, 2000). There is accumulating evidence that positive emotions are associated with advantageous physical and psychological health outcomes. Positive thoughts and attitudes are able to prompt changes in the body that strengthen the immune system, boost positive emotions, decrease pain and chronic disease, and provide stress relief. Individuals vary in the extent to which they use positive emotions to cope with stressful situations. Consequently, in response to stress, those with greater propensities to cope with humor show increases in levels of salivary immunoglobulin A, a vital immune system protein, which is the body's first line of defense against respiratory illnesses (Dillon, Minchoff & Baker,1985-1986).
