These photographs are mostly of beautiful men (although there are women and children), mostly black & white (although there is some color), and mostly of faces (although there are some body shots).McWilliams (mostly known for his nonfiction books) has an ability to capture personality on film. You look at a photo and say, "I'd like to meet that person." He obviously cares about people as well as the art of the portrait. He quotes Ansel Adams: "To photograph truthfully and effectively is to see beneath the surface and record the qualities of nature and humanity which lie or are latent in all things."Although McWilliams is obviously an artist with the camera, he does not take himself too seriously. He also quotes Gore Vidal: "Photography is the "art form' of the untalentend."I've seen hundreds of collections of photographs, and this is one of the best.
