Unbelievable

This book is excellent with lots of great quality pictures and relevant information. It really catalogs all the houses and places of interest in and around the town. Ive been to Pompeii and have seen alot of books on the subject, however this is truly the best book on Pompeii I have ever seen. It is a must for Roman history fans!

An extraordinary picture book of ancient Roman Art

I collect books of ancient Greek and Roman art. This is unquestionably one of the most beautiful books available and the price is, quite honestly, astonishing. Of the books on Pompeii, this too is perhaps the best. A very large, heavy book, you will find page after page of color photographs of statuary, mosaics, paintings, and architecture. Beyond just being about Pompeii, this is a great collection of Roman art.....period. I highly recommend this book to artists specializing in this period or anyone who loves the art of this time. As far as the text, I cannot vouch for it. I bought the book for the pictures and have yet to read the text itself.

Probably the Best Visual Book on Pompeii

The coffee table book is not one of my favorite types. Many are no more than picture books with no real content. However, now and then one comes along that is both well written and well produced. "Pompeii", edited by Filippo Coarelli is just such a book. I have been looking for a book on Pompeii that neither sanitized nor concentrated on the more explicit paintings and other art work found in the ruined Roman city. This is certainly it! The magnificent photos and sparkling text give the reader a real feel for the city before it was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius during the time of Vespasian. It was indeed a very modern city, with villas, food stalls, bakeries, sporting arenas, and of course, brothels - all of which, whether legal or not, can be found today in any bustling metropolis. A great book for anyone interested in this particular period of Roman history, its art and the lives of the people. Any Lindsey Davis fan will find a lot of interesting background material to add to the pleasure of her mysteries, which are set in this period.
