One of my favorite kids' books...

Thanks to overcrowding in the elementary school, 11-year-old Polly Rhodes is being sent to junior high. Instead of finally getting the chance to be one of the oldest kids in school, she's being thrown into a huge new school as one of the youngest! As long as she has her best friend Staci, Polly thinks it'll be okay. But does she still have Staci? Since visiting her father in California over the summer, Staci's been full of new ideas about fashion and how to act. Polly feels like a little kid next to her. When school starts, Polly finds out it's all just as bad as she imagined. She's alone without friends, she's stuck taking music when she can't sing, and she fears undressing in front of all the other girls in the locker room. To make matters worse, Polly attracts the wrath of a bully, who dumps glue over her long red hair... But, just as she's about to give up, Polly realizes that life never gives her more bad things than she can handle. Without even realizing it, Polly's mastered the things that initially scared her about her new school; and more importantly, she's learned she *can* get along without Staci.
