It All Started With A Game

Based on incidents from author Faith Graham's own life, Playthings takes the reader on a journey of erotic fantasy and mysterious intrigue. Faith Graham fell into her job as a journalism professor at a London university after failing to fulfill her dream of writing and producing documentaries. It is this yearning for more professionally, coupled with her restlessness in a dead-end, sexually unfulfilling relationship with an unadventurous man, that leads her into a three-way commitment to Tim and Sally, an attractive interracial couple. Faith is initially drawn to Sally, a blond, sassy wanna-be actress. Tim, a tall, handsome Black British magazine publisher, also happens to be Faith's best friend's ex. She hungrily accepts the couple's offer to complete the triangle and become an equal partner in their relationship. Tim and Sally each profess their love and devotion to Faith and she starts freelancing at Tim's magazine. At last, she feels fulfilled. Meanwhile, the murder and rape of a young, black woman by a group of white boys in Faith's neighborhood sends her on a search to uncover the truth. As she is unraveling that mystery with the help of her journalism students, she discovers secrets about her relationship that send her reeling. Against the backdrop of violent social unrest, after the motives behind the murder are revealed, Faith confronts some unsettling truths about each of her lovers and about herself. Overall, Playthings was a good read. It was well-written, as one would expect from a journalist. I especially enjoyed the details that gave insight into life in London, which is why I enjoy reading stories set in places outside of the US that I may not have visited. Lovers of erotica and those curious about three-way relationships will not be disappointed! The sex scenes were vividly depicted, raw, and yet still sensual. I certainly did not have to use my imagination! I felt almost like a participant-observer. That is skillful writing! My only critique would be that in the latter half of the book, the murder subplot seemed to drag and sometimes overshadow the main story, the building and unraveling of this love triangle. I look forward to the author's next offering, even a sequel to this novel. The ending did leave me wondering what might come next for Faith the character and whether she could sustain the choices she ultimately made. Reviewed by Danielle H. APOOO BookClub
