The best thing about this wonderful collection of plays from America's most important showcase for new theater is FREEDOMLAND by Amy Freed. I saw the play in its South Coast debut -- almost a year before it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize -- and even then it was obvious that this was a play of dazzling brilliance. So funny, so smart, so poignant, so shocking. It's about an American family -- but it's about an American family the way Shaw's plays are about families. The play is really a critique of turn of the millennium morality, a summing up and a moving forward. Freed is easily one of the best playwrights in the country.
