Wonderful memories of childhood and family

Along with recipes, this book features selected poems and the author's stories and memories of life on the farm, family get-togethers, Christmas, Pancake Day, St. Patrick's Day, ice fishing, and more. With her recipe for "Old Fashioned Apple Butter Spread", she tells us "When I was a little girl, we went every fall to Apple Hill to pick apples or to buy prepicked apples for winter. Mama always bargained with the farmer for 'seconds,' apples that were small or blemished. She would say to our father, 'These will do fine for applesauce and apple butter.'" Her recipe for "Mother's Homemade Tomato Soup" includes this description: "When I was a little girl, I used to help Mother peel and can great boxes of tomatoes for winter use. Sometimes we'd put up as many as 100 quarts... Mother stewed them to make this old-time tomato soup." More of my favorite recipes in the book include: Effie's Faerie Chocolate, Old Fashioned Apple Butter Spread, Mama's Diced Chicken and Homemade Noodles, Old Fashioned Red Bean Stew, One-Dish Dinner, Floyd's Favorite Pot Roast, Great Aunt Mae's New England Clam Chowder, Effie's Corn Au Gratin, Russian Tea Cakes, Ada's Cider and Tea Punch, Mother's California Corn Chowder, Old Fashoned Boiled Cabbage, Scalloped Potatoes Au Gratin, and many more. I checked it out from our local library and liked it so much I went online and purchased a copy even before I'd finished with the library copy. :) A great book to have on your bookshelf.

I grew up in a family where stories and food, were passed like wine...I think that the recipes are great, but found the packaging ~ with pictures and stories especially inviting... I am trying to locate other books by this author and hope to one day own all of them...
