I read this book at 14 and was inspired enough by it to become a test pilot myself

A Journey to Memoryland!

I also read this book as a child, mainly because my father, a close friend of the author, fellow test pilot, and one of the unsung heros of aviation history, is mentioned in it. I used to love to get it down from the shelf and read the short, but very sweet account of my father's exceptional skills as a pilot. I don't have a copy, but would love to get one.

Test pilot account of P-38. Great!

Read it as a child in l950's. A test pilot's experience with the development and testing of P-38 aircraft. Fascinating - may have been first plane to actually approach/break sound barrier (in a dive) but did not know what was causing shaking. Speed brakes added as stabilzing effort. Detailed story about testing evolution of a great WW II aircraft.
