Written dramatic verse the solo-play captures the narratives of American soldiers from World War II, Vietnam, and the Iraq War. A son returns home from Iraq, his grandfather recalls his victories at Normandy, and a father becomes lost in his voiceless shame trying to forget Vietnam. In March 2003 Kenny Carnes resigned his ten year commission as a U.S. Army officer and combat-trained aviator to pen a series of monologues targeting the polarity of Americans as a nation catalyzed itself to war in Iraq. Based on interviews, observations, imagination and personal experience, Pieces of War seeks resolution through conflict, captures understanding through contemplation, and unites audiences in a common dialogue surrounding the universal journey of the hero in us all.
