Phoenix Rising: Book One of the Phoenix Virus series

"If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It's likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas." - Passage from the CDC Public Health Blog, posted March 16th, 2011.When I first read the CDC blog, I thought it was hilarious. Some intern that had a fascination with zombies who'd watched too many horror movies. In hindsight, I probably should have read a little more into it. If an organization like the CDC was even uttering the word "zombie", perhaps there was a reason for it. We would find out too late as we went about our daily lives that far too few of us were even remotely prepared. My name is Jim Anders. Prior to the outbreak I was a typical family man. I had a wife and two kids. There was nothing extraordinary about me whatsoever except my penchant for bad luck. Sometimes ordinary men find themselves thrust into extraordinary situations. The difference between a corpse and a real live breathing human being is equal parts luck, resiliency and perseverance. Sometimes, I lay awake at night and think about everything that we've been through to get us to this point. The mistakes I've made and people we've lost haunt me. I owed it to my family and the entire human race to carry on even without the ones that we've lost. Even now I can hear them shambling around in the darkness, unrelenting hunger on foot. They never stop. They never tire. They have no remorse or fear. We know how this happened now. We know who is responsible. We have a plan. Now it is their turn to run and hide because we will not stop. We cannot stop. We have hope and sometimes that is more important than luck, resiliency and perseverance. When it started I had no idea how significant my role would be in our collective survival, we were just trying to survive like everyone else. Let me start at the beginning...
