Peter Norton's Guide to Java Programming is a programmer's guide for Web developers. The highly qualified authors dispense their knowledge of Web programming with Java in an easy-to-understand format... This description may be from another edition of this product.
JDK 1.0.2 continues to be the most widely used version of Java. If you program for the Web this is the book for you. The book is chock full of code AND they work! I only found 1 code snippet that had a problem. Everything else worked! Now compare that to Teach Yourself Java where 5 out of 10 programs didn't work. Norton's influence on the book is strong but after reading several Stanek books, I see a lot of Stanek's style in here as well. Norton may know computers but Stanek knows the web. This gives you lots to look forward to in this well thought out book! Push all the other Java books off your desktop and put this one on it.
A serious book for serious people

Norton & Stanek are the dynamic duo when it comes to Java. If you look at the other options I think you will agree this is a great book. Solid use of object-oriented design and object-oriented programming concepts. Terrific practical advice from two industry authorities that know what they are talking about.
Helpful to say the least!

Java is my first programming language and I learned it thanks to Peter Norton's Guide to Java Programming. The combination of Norton's extensive background in programming and Stanek's extensive background in Internet/Web technologies makes the book truly great! This book opened the doorway to the Web. I liked the possibilities of the Web so much I went on to buy Stanek's Web Publishing Unleashed Professional and his Netscape ONE Developer's Guide. Both are great books as well
One of the best books as text, guide and quick reference
