This collection of 3 short novels by the incomparable Max Brand (Frederick Faust) is one of the best Leisure Books has released so far -- and they've done a LOT of great ones! The stories here are character studies of outlaws, the lives they lead and the lies and myths that spring up about them. SPEEDY'S MARE is another of the fine Speedy series, placing the young hero as a soon-to-be sheriff of a small town beset by evil men who want him out of the way. His craftiness in eluding and beating these folks is pure fun. The second offering, HIS FIGHT FOR PARDON, deals with public perception and the power of the press to raise up or bring low. The hero, Leon, comes to a town, sees the life he has lost in favor of living solo in the wilderness, and has a change of heart only to find that he has been crucified in the press and every horseman is hunting him. He makes a deal with the Govenor that he will bring in the real outlaw (who is hiding behind his good looks and glowing portrayal in the press) in exchange for a pardon. There's plenty of action in this one and a lot of heart. The title novel, PETER BLUE, is an excellent character study. Blue, wounded in a gunfight, has lost the use of his gun hand and is desperately trying to learn to shoot with his left hand before his enemies realize how vulnerable he is. In the meantime, being hold up in one place, he, too, learns the values of a "normal", fulfilling life until one of the gunmen he beat in the past comes to even the score. Now, Blue, with so much more to live for, is unable to defend himself. Or is he? All together this is an excellent collection of true classic stories. Max Brand along with Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour form the holy trinity of western writers. If you've read the other two and not Brand, then you're not experiencing everything the western can be.
