Book Overview

A gripping sf adventure from the acclaimed author of The Pliocene Exile series.

'I was living in pleasant anonymity under the name of Helmut Icicle, taking smartass sport-divers out on holocam trips around the reefs of Kedge-Lockaby. Fourteen thousand light years away from civilization, K-L's a freesoil planet way out in the boondocks, and that's the way I like it: it makes life easier if no-one asks nosy questions.
'So one minute there...

Not your usual Julian May book

And this is no bad thing. As many others have pointed out, May's other books--wonderfully good reads themselves, by the way--are very much a different sort of thing than Perseus Spur. The Rampart books are indeed a throwback of sorts to the early sci-fi Lensmen books of EE Doc Smith, but they are full of today's style of brashness in writing as well.Which makes for a great read. This is a good book, with an interesting setting and a fun adventure. It is not a thinking cap book, like her other books, so if that is what you like, you might not like this book so much. And I agree--May must have had great fun writing this book, it would seem. It sure was fun to read it!

Have some fun - Read this book

I've ben a fan of Juilian May since I read "Many Colored Land" quite a few years ago and I'm glad to see that she is still writing after she finished her Galactic Mileiu series. "Perseus Spur" is a little less cerebral than her last few book, but every bit as good. It also has a less ensemble cast of characters, but that just makes the action go even faster. The first person narratior is the sort of laid back hapless hero that you can't help but like and the plot has plenty of twists and turns to keep you awake. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Great book

I loved it. The characters are well developed, especially the importance of family and family ties for the main character. The second book is even better, and has even more interesting plot twists and turns.

Wham, Bam, thankyou Ma'am.....

Sorry about the one line summary up there. It's wanky, I know, but I couldn't help it-I thoroughly enjoyed reading May's latest novel. Being one of the premier sci fi authors in the world, the Grande Dame has a following of several million who are already predisposed to flip out over her works. Although this novel is no where near as deep and thought provoking as its' predecessors, Julian May once more wends a tale that is so easy to fall in love with that you can literally see it unfold as she describes it to you. All the other reader reviews have just about said it all- and I too love the way that this book emulates the style of old, whilst also take the piss out of it. It's no brain strainer, but May has obviously had a LOT of fun with this one..... Makes me think of Dr Who for some reason.

Excellently written entertainment

I strongly recommend Perseus Spur to all who enjoy science fiction of the highest caliber. Once again Julian May introduces us to an anti-hero of the highest order, her characters are witty, enjoyable and entrace you to read on. I only wish I hadn't read all of her books already, so I could read them afresh and get excited, surprised and overwhelmed all over again. Julian May is by far one of the best sci-fi authors ever.
