Keeps you thinking every page!

Book was very well written, and kept me thinking. These type of books are fantastic. I hadn't read for a while, but for some reason this one caught my eye. Don't want to say much so as not to give it away, but nice book overall.

Good first attempt

I found this book by accident and just bought it. I am glad I did. The story held my interests and it was a refreshing book with twists and turns and I did not expect the "bang at the end". It reminded me of the early Grisham novels. I just hope he stays fresh and gives us more of not the same, but different reading.

More!

A wonderful debut novel that is compulsively readable. Dealing with a subject that seems to have been covered to death, Latreille constantly surprises us. The novel's very few faults are more than outweighed by it's powerful strengths. I hope that we won't have to wait too long for another novel from this exciting and knowledgeable newcomer. By all means, purchase the book and start reading. You'll be hooked within minutes.

Compelling legal drama sure to be a best seller.

No wonder this novel is getting such rave reviews -- five stars and up. Not only does the author demonstrate an insider's knowledge of the legal system but he is also that rarity -- a writer who puts together no-nonsense sentences and manages to be graceful. At the heart of the book is a woman who must fight to save her child -- at any cost. And a lawyer who must count the cost if he is to hang on to his integrity. For those looking to be offended, there is lots of material here -- lawyers, judges, doctors, feminists, journalists -- you name it. In the end, however, the book reaffirms faith in humanity and its institutions, including the law. Rather than a legal thriller, I'd call this a legal drama. It is full of suspense and tension, but lurking beneath the surface are the larger questions of human life -- marriage, God, friendship, success and failure. This was the best read I've had this year.

Suffering serial killer burnout, but crave suspense?

Ex-public defender Jack Brenner has left Chicago, burned out on the criminal justice system, anxious to build a lucrative and relatively stress free, civil litigation career. But his friend, and new found mentor, asks him to defend Davey Alden. Davey committed perjury, and admitted it under cross examination, when she accused her husband of abusing their daughter. Refusing a plea bargain, Davey forces Jack back into the criminal court. This is one of the most exciting, suspenseful books I have read this year.
