Peon de Rey is NOT a mystery novel, despite the blurb on the back cover. If you are thinking of buying this book, it is more like Name of the Rose than an Agatha Christie novel (although Fernandez is not in the same league as Eco when it comes to the complexity of ideas but he has written books on art history so he is authoritative). Much of the novel deals with romanesque art and the associated symbolism / theological meaning it has. Most of the places described in the novel still exist and the description of northern Spain is excellent. The plot meanders along the Camino Santiago at about the same pace as the pilgrims! The Spanish used is a bit archaic but it is by no means difficult for someone reading Spanish as a second language.
