Great book, though it was a bit too rosy about her people

This was a very engaging and interesting book. Her story was very touching as she deals with the horrors of life in Turkey, funny in describing her adjustment to American life, touching again as she describes her loving husband. The one flaw was her rosy description of everything Armenian and her family, but such bias is to be expected. The most memorably passage, for me, was when they were on the road, having been evicted from their homes. She sneaks out and hears a conversation the men are having about their situation. Her grandfather is speaking, and her father is there too. It has been a while since I read the book, but basically they say that the Turks are incompetent to handle their own affairs, and that they think 2-1=3. This meant that Turks (the incompetents) thought eliminating Armenian's (the bankers, goldsmiths, and civil servants, I think) would benefit them. It was stunning to hear this view, since I had come to almost the exact same conclusions after having lived in Turkey (Istanbul and Van, in the far east) for over 10 years. Turks have a veneer of modernity, but they have not changed much as a people. They are enemies, or nearly so, with all their neighbors, and have a reputation for brutality that is strangly consistent across the region. "Opportunist" is the best word to describe them. You will likely have a fine time if you visit, just don't be taken in by the outward face.
Great Book!

I'm Armenian and this book was given to me by a relative who had read it. The copy I have went through my entire family so it's getting very worn. The book is everything that the previous reviewer has said, but more importantly, it gives great insight as to what the Armenian people endured. I'm saving my copy for my children to read since their great-great-grandfather came to the USA to escape the Armenian genocide.
pearl is the most suspenseful book i have ever read!!!!!

this book concerns the life of pearl kashishian who was 7 years old when the turkish massacre of armenia started. she was walking alone from her grandma's home when the attack began. she was told "run for your life!" this book documents her life of incredible danger--being sent to america alone to escape.answers to prayer are recounted till the very last page . secquel was written "brother of the bride" by donita dyer.best book i have ever read! unbelievable story. pearl died just before book was in print 1/6/77. she had prayed for someone to write this book to illustrate God's answers to prayer. very hard to find prints. contacted author and she sent sequal and told me publisher had been changed. have not been able to locate her since. would love to find her. excellent writer! lost my copy of the sequel but hope to locate one. both books are printed together. you read one and then turn book over and read the other one. this story would make a great movie. i wrote the producers of "the hiding place" by corrie ten boom and "joni" by joni ericson to suggest their making a movie of this remarkable life. i never got an answer. the way i found this book was unusual . i was in a church library brousing around and a little old lady asked if i had read "pearl".the cover looked dull and i waited till she had left to reshelve it..i had to leave first so i took it home and planned to return it later. one night i had nothing to read and opened it. this book grabbed my interest from the preface till the end. it is the best, most meaningful book i have ever read. i've given many copies for gifts before they quit printing it. never saw that little old lady again but i would love to have a copy of her top ten books list!!!! i wish i could express how much pearl's life taught me. the account of her leaving her family to go to the new world to marry someone she did not know and the danger of having to be smuggled out of her homeland, knowing this was her only chance for survival moved me tremendously. the chance of her ever seeing her family again being so remote was heartbreaking for her mother and father and siblings. as i was reading this account i couldn't help comparing my life's circumstances.my oldest daughter was about to be married and you can imagine how blessed i felt knowing i would be able to see her anytime i wanted to. this book has you hanging on the edge of your seat until the very last page. i wish it could be made into a movie or at least go back into another printing. i am still trying to locate the author. this is the first time i have gotten any acknowledgement of the existance of the book or of the author. my thanks to this web site.
