Anna Pavlova has fascinated me from grade school when I read my first biography of her and her dancing. This book is a wonderful addition to a ballet aficionado's library. Although I've read more comprehensive bios of Anna Pavlova, this one is one of my favorite books as it contains some of the most exquisite photographs of her in ballet poses, costume, and in private life. My favorite picture in the book is of her posing as Swanilda in Coppelia. The pose shows the playfulness, humor and artlessness of the character. She truly brings the character alive through just this one picture. Pavlova is still a yardstick for what a prima ballerina should be and this book with its pictures justifies the adulation she gets and deserves.
Her life in pictures

Like "Caruso, His Life in Pictures" by Francis Robinson, this is no mere coffee-table book. The story of Pavlova's life, mostly taken from her own words in interviews, is accompanied by marvelous studio and candid photographs. The narration by Margot Fonteyn is very quiet; you can almost hear her voice, speaking with a kind of hushed awe. Her description of Pavlova's traditional Russian Orthodox Church funeral is breathtaking. Pavlova always tried to emphasize the importance of beauty in art and everyday life. Young men as well as women should read this.
