Paul Robeson, a prominent civil rights activist, accomplished athlete, and talented performer, spent most his life fighting established forms of discrimination and racial inequality. His father, a former slave, served as pastor of a Presbyterian church, and his mother worked hard to support her family until she died at a young age from a tragic accident. Although Paul excelled in school and won a full scholarship to Rutgers University, he still had to face the indignities of racism that were all too common across the country during this period.
