Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children

Paul Robeson, a prominent civil rights activist, accomplished athlete, and talented performer, spent most his life fighting established forms of discrimination and racial inequality. He was born in 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey to parents who cared deeply about freedom and human rights. His father, a former slave, served as pastor of a Presbyterian church, and his mother worked hard to support her family until she died at a young age from a tragic accident. Although Paul excelled in school and won a full scholarship to Rutgers University, he still had to face the indignities of racism that were all too common across the country during this period. This book provides younger children with an informative introduction to Paul Robeson, an inspirational leader who never gave up and used his successes on the football field and in performance halls to send powerful messages about the importance of social justice and human rights.
