We love Patrick!

A fun witty book that everyone can appreciate, Patrick the Somnambulist, has definetly won the hearts of me and my family. What I loved most about this book is the story was perfect to read to the little ones but was so enjoyable for me. I have read this book SO many times and enjoyed it every time. The illustrations are fun and beautifully crafted and the story flows perfectly. Anyone who reads this book will laugh and love Patrick and his plunger. We can't wait for the next Patrick adventure!!!

Somnambulists Rule!!

I absolutely love this book. Labels can be so damaging to kids unless they can be seen in the right light. This book is so perfect for kids that may have any kind of label from Autistic to Myopic(nearsighted). Anyone who is struggling with being different will identify with Patrick and come out feeling a little stronger and more capable by the end of the book. I have three boys, and all three of them have Tourette Syndrome. Huge label. My youngest son (6yrs) read this story every night for weeks after we got it. When I read it with my older boys (12 & 10) it opened up a fantastic discussion about who they really are, what their strengths are and why it doesn't really matter if they have Tourette Syndrome after all. It was a really healing discussion. When I got this book, I had no idea that it would have such a great impact on my family. So, I'm really grateful to that little penguin who proudly wears a plunger and for Sarah Ackerley's creative talents. I can't wait for her next book to come out!!

Really fun book!

I think this book is just wonderful. And not just because I sleep walk, just like Patrick, as have many of the kids in my extended family. The language is simple and the message is a good one for early readers. It is a hard back cover, not like so many of the kids books published today. But, I really thought the details were wonderful. The illustrations are just fantastic, and I liked the style of the penguins (and of course penguins are always cute). I love the bits of humor that adults and older kids will really get a kick out of. I bought a copy for my favorite little girl, but I'm going to have to buy another one, because I'm keeping one for myself.

Cute bedtime story!

Patrick is a normal penguin kid like any other... until he falls asleep. Then he sleepwalks his way into all sorts of weird and crazy situations. At first he and his parents are unnerved by his odd behavior, but once Patrick has a name for his condition, he becomes more comfortable with it and even embraces it as a part of himself. The difference he was once ashamed of actually becomes a source of pride. The idea that being different isn't bad, and can even be a good thing, is subtle and is buried in humor, but anyone who is different from the norm will identify with Patrick and will get the message. Young kids will enjoy hearing this story night after night at bedtime, and older kids who have been picked on or made fun of, or who just feel uncomfortably different from everyone else in some way, will also find a positive message here. (Just don't be surprised to find your child one day wrapped in toilet paper and wearing a plunger on his head!)
