Excellent, concise guide for out-of-towner

This inspired little book paid for itself many times over during my recent six-day unplanned stay in San Francisco. Divided by neighborhood, it led me to many inexpensive but delicious restaurants near my hotel on Market Street, and tipped me off to others (including cafes, bakeries and delis) while walking and biking around town. The index also introduced me to Russian and Mexican eateries, plus creperies and wine bars I never would have found otherwise. It's compact enough to carry around so you have it when hunger strikes. I also took Ms. Unterman's advice to trek over to Berkeley to the (relatively affordable) Chez Panisse Cafe, which was the highlight of my trip.

Delightful Dish on Delectable Dishes

This user-friendly guide by San Francisco chef and food critic Patricia Unterman is a completely revised directory of Bay Area eateries and culinary places. It's divided into chapters named after various city districts and three others entitled "Marin County," "The East Bay," and "Wine Country." Besides restaurants, each chapter includes such diverse categories as produce markets, takeout delis, wine shops, bars, butchers, bakeries, and cookware stores. Best of all are the additional indexes in the back where one can locate a listing by either price, type of cuisine, or special features. Like any good restaurant guide, this one covers location, hours of operation, price range, and types of payment accepted. However, its uniqueness lies in the delicious descriptions offered by its opinionated author, who comes off as a cross between an unapologetic customer reviewer and a connoisseur who really knows her stuff. This makes such material worthwhile reading for residents and an essential reference for visitors. In a city where one establishment replaces another virtually overnight, it's wonderful to have an up-to-date guide that a foodie can have faith in. Reviewed by Richard Mandrachio
