Informative, very readable history of Italian Cinema (c. 1942-1984)

Liehm's book is one of the most informative and interesting guides to post-war Italian cinema. She covers a lot of territory! --- ["Mira Liehm has known personally many of the leading figures in Italian cinema, and her work is rich in insights into their lives and working methods."---back cover] If you enjoy reading about international cinema, this is one of the most comprehensive, well illustrated, and lucid general guides to Italian cinema currently available. Don't hesitate to buy this book even if you think the material may be dated, though an updated edition including Italian films of the last 20 years would be most welcome. For those seeking more recent Italian film criticism, Millicent Marcus' AFTER FELLINI is a must-read. Prof. Marcus (Univ. of Penn.) can be seen and/or heard on Criterion's THE LEOPARD DVD release, on the MALENA DVD, and joining director Giuseppe Tornatore for commentary on the new (2006) 2-disc edition and 3-disc "Collector's" edition of CINEMA PARADISO.
