I read this book at my 90 year-old grandmother's house. She had sent away for it via magazine back in the days when shopping was done mostly by catalog if you lived on farms away from town and city. It is a forgotten delight!
Set in northern CA when telephones were newfangled devices, this story tells the story from the perspective of a woman reminiscing of her youth when she used to hang out with the town's operator---the gal who would connect phone calls but plugging in and removing wires. Every house had its own pattern of ring so that they would know when to answer....and of course everyone in town could listen to everyone else's phone calls without anyone knowing they were on the line. The story tells the story of the town and the doings and undoings of individuals and families as a result of the evesdropping and gossip done via partyline. It is enjoyable and entertaining and leaves one pondering if our society is really better off not knowing our neighbors as is too often the case today.
