What if Nazi Germany had been closer to an atomic bomb than the official record reports? What if - in a final act of destructive fervor of which every dictator is capable - Hitler had ordered three teams to deploy and use such weapons in the largest citiies in each of the three allied powers? What if the success of such actions was mixed? James Kunetka - perhaps better known for similar style novels co-authored with Whitley Streiber - weaves a thouroughly plausible story of just that happening. No new ground is covered thematically. There have been a number of stories positing alternative histories to major events; 'Eye of the Needle" and 'The Eagle Has Landed' come to mind. We also know from very early in the story that at least two detonations did not occur. But, it's a good solid story that keeps you reading right to the very end.
