The Key to Successful Parenting

This is one part of Sally's "Parenting By the Spirit" series, which contains books for dealing with each age level. Her book for parents of teenagers has just been released, and a friend who's reading it tells me it's superb, as are the other books in this series. My husband and I have met Sally and Jim's children numerous times from their their early teen years to full maturity, and parenting by the Holy Spirit's guidance has definitely worked for their family. As a mom of seven myself, having studied just about every parenting technique out there, I've come to believe parenting by the Spirit is the ONLY thing that works to raise Godly children. Sally's writings are full of illustrative stories, and it's very easy to identify with her. She is never condemnatory; no matter how badly you've messed up already, through her writing she comes along-side, as a big sister or experienced friend, to encourage and point the way. A parenting book like no other

There is hope for all of us and our kids! No, babies are not born with an owners manual, but we were all created by the same God and it is our privilage to know Him so personnally we can be directed by His voice. Sally tells of her own experience raising her children with God's leading, and shares how we too can have that relationship with the Creator. What could be better than an owners manual? How about actually being impressed as to what to do by the one who made us and knows us better than we know ourselves. Parenting By The Spirit gives encouragement for us all to strive to a higher standard and for us as parents to submit ourselves to Gods leading, so we can be as clay in the potters hand. Practical and life-changing, this book is not about surface parenting as are most parenting books out there. This book gets to the core of the issue, which really comes down to only one, our relationship with God. I do highly recommend this book.

For we parents who don't know everything!

As a parent, I can't read my child's mind or necessarily know what ought to be done in each situation. It has always been a blessing to know I can have the counsel of the ultimate parent, God. Sally Hohnberger guides the reader in learning to consult God about everything relating to raising your child with excellence. Every parent I know wants to be the best at loving, tbe best at understanding, at dealing with problems, at discipline, etc. But no one is the best at all those things except God, and Hohnberger humbly reveals her parenting challenges and shortcomings in order to share with the reader the process of learning to lead and respond to our children best by consulting God. She teaches how to stop and think in the heat of the moment--to parent for the long term instead of just reacting emotionally to the immediate situation. I gave it four stars instead of five because of minor editing problems throughout the book. These distract a little, but don't detract from the superb content. This book will be helpful to Christians and non-Christians alike.
