Bookseller's Delight

I read a lot of novels. Most of them, while entertaining for the moment, are easily forgotten. Every once in awhile, though, I come across a book that endures long after the reading. Papaya Myths is one of those books. The characters are real. Oh so real. We get to know 26-year-old Jocelyn as she experiences the exhilaration of her first romance-a love that flourishes in all the ways a woman could ever hope for. Nearly 60 years later, we revisit Jocelyn's life through her own eyes as she shares these unforgettable events-including one startling surprise-with her granddaughter. Lest you think that Papaya Myths is just another accounting of an old person's reminiscences, guess again. This is much too big a book. There is mystery. There is suspense. There is humor. There is conflict on a national scale, revealing problems America may yet face in the dawning of this new millennium. Papaya Myths is an important book and one you'll not soon forget.

A wonderful, intriguing story

Papaya Myths is a wonderful, intriguing story that kept me turning the pages faster and faster till the very end. While I was initially skeptical that it would ultimately have a science fiction twist, the plot was instead entirely believable. The characters were both tangible and likable despite (or maybe because of) their human frailties. I hate to say that I found the book thought-provoking, since that might deter someone who's simply looking for a good read. But Papaya Myths is both. I can't wait for Ms. Scott's next book!

Don't Fall For Labels

Papaya Myth's combination of secrets from the past and the unknown menace of the present is an engrossing mixture. While some novels may start out strong and falter midway, this book will have you reading compulsively, faster and faster, unable to tear yourself away until you know ALL the answers. Approaching the close of the novel, you will want to be able to read, uninterrupted, to the finish. The author thinks Papaya Myths may be taken as simply a "chick book." While that is one of the genders that will appreciate it, a novel with so much to offer won't be pigeonholed so easily. Whatever they decide to label it, wherever they shelve it, rest assured that Papaya Myths will break through to be heard. Seek it out and do your part to shatter the artificial barriers locking books into one rigid category. Fiction this superb doesn't need a classification.
