This is one of the very best sci-fi novels I've ever read (or written, being a fiction writer). I reread it recently (in 2007), some 30 years after it was first published and it was at least as applicable as I remember it from the seventies. In fact, some of the content is more relevant today - for instance the entire Soviet involvement in the turbulence about an alien who has landed in Switzerland high atop a mountain in a vintage plane that never actually flew - an Italian Pampini. Read it, it's a must. A mordant satirical take on the extraterrestrial visitor theme. This novel would make a great - I repeat great - movie. And I'm writing in 2008.
