Paintings of New England

Perhaps the most inspiring collection of paintings I have ever seen encompassing so many special elements of this uniquely beautiful part of the U.S.

Illustrated throughout in full colour

Following the same formula as other books in this series edited by Arnold Skolnick, a full page picture of a painting occasionally accompanied by literary quote, this provides an interesting collection. There is an introductory text by Carl Little which looks at the beauty of New England as seen through the eyes of the artists. The list if artists illustrated spanning around 180 years includes: Robert Salmon, Rockwell Kent, Stuart Davis, Lewis Bryden, Gabor Peterdi, Charles Octavius Cole, Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Edward Hill, Stephen Hannock, Eastman Johnson, John Fredric Kennett, Winslow Homer, John Sloan, John Henry Twachtman, Maurice Prendergast, Childe Hassam, William Wallace Gilchrist, , George Bellows, the Wyeths, Peter Blume, Oscar Bluemner, Stefan Hirsch, Edward Hopper, William J Glackens, Thomas Hart Benton, Leon Kroll, Marguerite Zorach, Marsden Hartley, Milton Avery, Maxfield Parrish, Beverly Hallam, Neil Welliver, Wolf Kahn, and many more; in total over 100 pictures all in full colour, mostly reproduced full page.

Wonderful intro to New England

We bought this book as a gift for a host who hasn't been to New England. It is superb on almost all counts. It contains our favorite artists and favorite places and covers a wide range of history in the process. As an introduction to New England, it does a wonderful job of giving a feel for the region, and could be improved only by a little more attention to urban life--but that is small criticism. Although I am not an art historian, I do feel that the book reflects the range of art and artists that I have seen in galeries around New England. It is a great alternative to coffee-table books of photographs, and has the added benefit of being small enough to fit easily in a suitcase. I'm going to buy one for myself, too, so that I can read the introduction at my leisure and enjoy the pictures regularly.
