Lens & pens portraits

This is a large sized book that gives justice to some of Mexico's artists coming from various disciplines. Published by the Smithsonian press with help especially from Friends of The Arts of Mexico this thick volume is a monumental task brought to your fingertips so that you may enjoy reading about your favorite artist. Each artist interviewed and discussed features a "signature" of the artist which in itself is revealing. Each person has several pages dedicated to them which includes a photographic portrait that usually shows some aspect of their work, some have more works revealed and usually is accompanied by an interview. It is refreshing to see the diverse disciplines in one book. The artists palete in this case features people from the world of literature like Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Elena Poniatowska, painters such as Rufino Tamaya, Leonore Carrington, German Venegas and many others that blend with poets, weavers, chefs, choreographers, ceramists, sculptors, architects, photographers, playwrights, conductors and other artists. Part of the beauty is that several of these artists have since(1991) passed away and here you have their thoughts on their works and other subjects. There is certain alchemy to be found in this book that is bound by the synergistc qualities of a nation whose sculptures and arts have a history that dates back to the pre-hispanic conquest. This is one of those books that can be read in several sittings or never finished at all so that there is always someone new to discover as well as their thoughts on the art process. I like to keep this book handy to browse at will and if interested do further research on the person. An outstanding addition to your library if you are interested in the arts of Mexico and their principle contemporary proponents. Recommended for the art enthusiast.
