I was delighted to find this writer's second collection of short stories. Here are the New and the Old Ireland side by side in almost cinematic detail, with an evocation of the spirit of "home" that's carried in the consciouness of emigrants and those they've left behind. Eddie Stack deserves to be more widely read - he's a singular and rich voice in contemporary Irish fiction.
Irish life from West to West -- with wild wit and wonder
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
In Out of the Blue, seasoned West Clare storyteller Eddie Stack strings together a chain of sparky vignettes of life, both there in County Clare and in the expatriate community of San Francisco. With his wicked wit and his sharp ear for dialogue, Stack can limn out an out-of-work construction worker's futile dreams of homecoming in the bars along San Francisco's Geary Boulevard, a Riverdance lead dancer's experience of love while touring America, a woman singer in San Francisco who is looking for her guitar (and love) in all the wrong places, a posse of iends making a Guinness commercial in Clare and a band playing the last night of a residency in an ancient hotel in Enistymon. All Irish exiles will lap it up.
