Book Overview

The first novel written about the bushcountry gunslinger who was both the national hero and devil incarnate of Australia, Ned Kelly imagines the inner life of a figure described by historian Manning Clark as "a wild ass of a man, snarling, roaring and frothing like a ferocious beast when the tamer entered the cage." Written with brilliant clarity and impressionistic economy, Ned Kelly follows Kelly and his outlaw gang of "bushrangers" through the...

Great Heath Ledger movie

This is one of the last movies i've seen of Heath ledger. It was a great movie. Since watching Heath in THE DARK KNIGHT I became a fan and had to watch all his movies. This one is one of my favorites. I had never heard of Ned Kelly so I was also interested in learning more about him and how Heath brought his character to life. Heath was more than an amazing actor. He knew how to bring his characters to life and make them likeable and real. I highly recommend this film even if your not a Heath Ledger fan.

ned kelly is a winner

I must admit that the only reason i got interested in Ned Kelly was because of the movie with Orlando Bloom. But, I read the book and have immensly enjoyed the emotional story of a man dedicated to helping the abused Irish toiling under the English. When you read 5 times after aqcuiring it like I did, you will become attached. It is a wonderfully written book mixing fiction into the fact about this brave outlaws life. Robert Drewe makes it very explainitory and metaphoric. The characters running from the police seem so real.

Mesmerizing

You don't have to be familiar with Australian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang's crime spree in 1887-1880--this novel is about the man confronting his own mythic notoriety as he's holed up in a small town to make one last stand. Other reviews have called the narrative impressionistic, and I can't do better than that. Drewe creates dreamlike scenes from Kelly's life evoking the physical world of heat, dust, ants, parakeets, mud, rain, fire to anchor them. It's an amazing book that you won't be able to put down. One note: the original title of this novel is "Our Sunshine"--this is the movie tie-in edition.

Highest quality lyricism

Robert Drewes works have a dreamy quality suffusing history and stark realities with often absurd , surreal elements which lend them a poetic, lycrical quality. 'Our sunshine' is the story of Australian Bush Ranger Ned Kelly , told as never before. At once sympathetic and insightful , Kelley is a reluctant 'hero', larger than life and yet humbled , brought to love and disaster by the grinding wheel of fate and the harshness of colonial Australia. If you enjoy evocative , visual and just plain beautiful writing you must read 'Our Sunshine'.
